You’ve all heard it this time of year.
“What are you giving up for Lent?”
My reply this year was ‘nothing’. This got a few looks of confusion. I went on to explain, and I’ll explain here.
Is Lent really about giving something up? Sure, we all know that Lent is about penance and sacrifice, but one thing people overlook is that Lent is about change. Does giving up chocolate for forty days and then wolfing chocolate Easter bunnies sound much like change for you?
The things we should focus on (if we are ‘giving something up’ or not) are:
#1: What I want to change during Lent
#2: How this change will bring me closer to God and my faith
A lot of Catholic Tumblrs I follow are simply giving up Tumblr for Lent. Cool, if we’re addicted to Tumblr, the abstinence of it might be a penance in itself. But is giving up Tumblr for forty days and then logging back in on Easter morning really
